What is e-liquid?

E-liquid, also known as vape juice or e-juice, is the liquid used in electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and vape devices. When heated by the coil, it turns into the vapour you inhale.

E-liquids consist of a few key ingredients: Vegetable Glycerin (VG) and Propylene Glycol (PG), flavourings, and nicotine (optional). These components work together to deliver your ideal vape hit, cloud production, and flavour sensation.

What is inside vape juice?

E-liquid is made up of just a few key ingredients:

Nicotine (optional)

There are two main types:

  • Freebase nicotine —  Gives a stronger throat hit and is ideal for higher nicotine strengths or for vapers who prefer a sensation similar to traditional smoking.
  • Nicotine salts — Smoother and absorbed faster, providing a more satisfying experience even at lower wattages. To find out more, read our guide on What Are Nic Salts?

Both types of nicotine are available across a wide range of e-liquids, so you can choose the one that best suits your vaping style.

The right nicotine strength depends on how much you used to smoke and what type of vape kit you’re using.

  • Light or social smokers — Try 3mg vape juice.
  • Medium smokers — 6mg to 12mg usually feels right.
  • Heavy smokers — 18mg to 20mg vape juice or nicotine salts for a smoother experience.

If you’re unsure, start lower and increase it if you’re not getting enough satisfaction. Most vapers quickly find their ideal strength with a little experimentation.

Yes! You can buy nicotine-free vape juice (often called 0mg e-liquid). These are great if you’ve already reduced your nicotine intake or if you simply enjoy vaping for the flavour.

Many shortfill bottles come nicotine-free by default — you can then add a nic shot later if you want to customise the strength

Vegetable Glycerine (VG) & Propylene Glycol (PG)

VG (Vegetable Glycerin) is one of the main ingredients in vape juice. It’s responsible for creating those thick, smooth clouds of vapour and gives your e-liquid a sweeter taste.

High VG vape juices are perfect for sub-ohm kits and those who love big vapour production.

PG (Propylene Glycol) is a thinner liquid that carries flavour and delivers a stronger throat hit. It’s used in higher amounts in e-liquids designed for Mouth-To-Lung (MTL) vaping.

If you prefer a sharper hit that feels closer to smoking, look for vape juices with a higher PG content.

The VG/PG ratio describes how much vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol are in your vape juice. The mix determines your vaping experience.

  • Higher PG (like 60/40) — This gives you a stronger throat hit and more intense flavour. They're great for smaller kits and those who prefer a mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping style, similar to smoking.
  • Higher VG (like 70/30) — This is a thicker liquid that produces bigger clouds and a smoother inhale, making them ideal for sub-ohm kits and Direct-To-Lung (DTL) vaping.

A 50/50 e-liquid gives a balanced mix of flavour, vapour and throat hit, making it excellent for beginners.

Check the label for the VG/PG ratio to find what works best with your device and how you like to vape.

Flavouring

Flavours in vape juice are created using food-grade flavour concentrates. These can be fruity, sweet, menthol, dessert-inspired, or tobacco-based.

The flavourings are blended with vegetable glycerin (VG), propylene glycol (PG), and nicotine (if included) to create the finished e-liquid. The VG/PG ratio influences how flavours are experienced, with higher PG delivering a sharper flavour and throat hit, while higher VG provides a smoother inhale with softer flavour intensity.

Yes, you can mix vape juices to create your own unique flavour combinations. For example, blending a strawberry vape liquid with vanilla can make a strawberries and cream mix.

Just be sure to stick to similar VG/PG ratios when mixing to maintain consistent performance and vapour production.

There are also DIY VG/PG base vape liquids where you can add a flavour concentrate of your choice.

Vape juice comes in a wide mix of flavours to suit every palate:

Tobacco — A classic option for those who prefer a more traditional, cigarette-style taste.

The different types of e-liquids

Nicotine salts

Nicotine salts are a form of nicotine naturally found in tobacco and adapted for use in vape juice. It delivers nicotine more efficiently and smoothly than traditional freebase. Nic shots are available in 5mg, 10mg and 20mg strengths.

Recommended for: New vapers or anyone who wants fast, smooth nicotine delivery without the harshness.

Freebase nicotine

Freebase nicotine is the traditional form used in most e-liquids. It provides a stronger throat hit and a slower nicotine absorption, similar to what smokers are used to.

Recommended for: Those who enjoy a sharper throat hit, former smokers who want a familiar feel, and anyone using more powerful devices.

Shortfills

Shortfills are larger bottles of nicotine-free vape juice, usually 50ml or 100ml, with space left at the top so you can add your own nic shot

Recommended for: Sub-ohm vapers who use more e-liquid and want flexibility in their nicotine strength.

Vaping styles and which e-liquid to choose

MTL

Mouth to Lung style of vaping closely mimics traditional cigarette smoking, where you draw vapour into your mouth first before inhaling it into your lungs. It delivers a gentle, discreet amount of vapour and a noticeable throat hit.

Recommended e-liquids for MTL vape kits

MTL devices, including most pod kits and starter vape kits, are built for low-wattage vaping and work best with thinner e-liquids and higher nicotine strengths. These liquids wick quickly through the smaller coils.

Choose:

  • 50/50 VG/PG e-liquids
  • High-PG vape juice
  • Nic salt e-liquids
  • Freebase nicotine e-liquids

RDL

Restricted Direct to Lung sits between MTL and DTL styles. It’s a looser, airier draw than MTL, but still not as open as full DTL. It offers a smooth inhale, balanced flavour and moderate vapour production — ideal if you want to step up from MTL without going straight to big clouds.

Recommended e-liquids for RDL vape kits

RDL devices require mid-range VG/PG blends, such as 50/50, that strike a balance between flavour and vapour. Both nic salts and freebase nicotine pair nicely with RDL — salts for a smoother, faster hit, freebase for a bit more punch.

Choose:

50/50 VG/PG e-liquids

60/40 VG/PG blends

Nic salt e-liquids

Freebase nicotine e-liquids

Coils rated 0.6ohm–0.9ohm

DTL

In Direct to Lung vaping, you inhale vapour straight into your lungs, much like taking a deep breath. This style creates dense clouds and intense flavour, making it popular among sub-ohm vapers.

Recommended e-liquids for DTL vape kits

DTL kits, also known as sub-ohms, are built for use with high VG vape juice — typically 70% VG or higher. These thicker e-liquids produce large, dense clouds and deliver rich, full flavour.

Choose

  • 70/30 VG/PG e-liquids
  • 80/20 VG/PG e-liquids
  • Shortfill e-liquids (add nic shots if needed)
  • Low nicotine strengths (typically 3mg or less)

Frequently Asked Questions

The longevity of an e-liquid bottle depends on your vaping habits and the bottle size. Here’s a rough estimate:

  • 10ml bottle — Lasts about 3,000 puffs and can refill a 2ml vape pod or tank up to five times.
  • 50ml bottle — Offers approximately 10,000 to 15,000 puffs, refilling a vape pod or tank up to 25 times.

100ml bottle — You’re looking at around 20,000 to 30,000 puffs, refilling a vape pod or tank up to 50 times!

Yes, e-liquids do expire. Most e-liquids have a shelf life of about 2 years, but the flavour and nicotine strength may decrease over time. To keep your vape juice fresh, store it in a cool, dark place, and check for changes in colour, flavour, or consistency.

Most vape juice bottles have childproof caps, which means you'll need to push the cap down firmly while twisting it anti-clockwise.

If you're finding it difficult, try using a cloth or rubber grip to get a better hold. Just be careful not to squeeze the bottle too hard while opening, as it can cause it to spill. Once it's open, always reseal properly to keep it fresh and store it somewhere safe and out of reach of children or pets.

Shortfill e-liquid is a larger bottle of nicotine-free vape juice that’s intentionally not filled to the top so you can add nic shots. For example, 50ml of liquid in a 60ml bottle (room for one 10ml nic shot), or 100ml in a 120ml bottle (room for two nic shots).

Shortfills are usually high-VG blends designed for sub ohm vaping, big clouds and rich flavour. Add your nic shots, shake well, and you’re ready to vape.

Nicotine salt e-liquids use a smoother, faster-absorbing form of nicotine that delivers a comfortable inhale even at higher strengths. They’re ideal for pod kits and MTL vaping, and are popular with anyone who wants quick, satisfying nicotine delivery without a harsh throat hit.

Nic salts are usually sold in 10ml bottles (UK size limits for nicotine-containing e-liquids) and come in strengths like 5mg, 10mg and 20mg. They’re ready to use straight away; just fill your pod or tank and vape as normal.

Yes, you can take vape juice on a plane, but it must follow standard liquid rules. Bottles must be 100ml or under if stored in hand luggage. However, larger bottles can go in checked luggage.

Keep everything sealed to avoid leaks caused by cabin pressure, and remember: you cannot vape on the plane. Always check your airline’s regulations before you fly, as policies can vary.

Yes, you can mix vape juices, and many vapers do it to create custom flavours or adjust nicotine strength. It’s recommended to mix juices with similar VG/PG ratios to keep performance and wicking consistent, and to only mix flavours that complement each other.

You should avoid mixing nicotine salts with high-VG shortfills unless you’re confident with nicotine strengths and device suitability. Nic salts are typically formulated for low-power MTL pod kits, while high-VG shortfills are designed for sub-ohm devices, so mixing them can result in an unpleasant vape or excessive nicotine delivery.

Vape juice varies in price depending on size and type.

  • 10ml nic salts or 50/50 liquids — Typically £3–£5 each (often cheaper in multi-buy deals).
  • Shortfills (50ml or 100ml) — Usually £8–£15, depending on brand and bottle size.

Higher-end brands may cost slightly more, but most vapers find a quality e-liquid that fits their budget easily.
